Moss Media offers prompt, cost efficient help in every area of broadcasting. Our expertise embraces radio station design, including planning, specifying and installation for all types and sizes of station - and also includes training, station maintenance, repairs, redesigns and development projects to help make your broadcast studios and systems more efficient. If you need a major item - perhaps a CD or SD card player, new mixing desk, transmission processor, ISDN or IP kit - we can help. If you need reliable routine or one-off radio station repairs, we can help there too. Equally if you're happy to do your own minor maintenance work, or have a technician available, with an extensive contact list we can probably source and supply all the parts you'll need - from faders to replacement bulbs and LED's - to specially made connecting leads. We keep stocks of many fast moving parts used by broadcasters, we offer a rapid "Beyer headphone repairs and spares by post" service for industry standard Beyer products - and we're always willing to have a chat about any broadcast problem that's worrying you. We also have an associate team able to provide specialist help in areas such as programming and traffic.

Listed on these pages are just some of our many services, in two basic sections: putting a station on the air - and keeping it running once there. If what you're looking for involves radio broadcasting but doesn't seem to be here, please don't hesitate to call or e-mail.

We look forward to being of service!

Big or small - putting your station 'on air'
As an independent, long established and experienced operator, we're happy to take you through the various stages of putting a new station on the air, offering professional advice in whichever areas you need. This might involve forming an overall plan and timeline for the project, providing costings, selecting a transmission area, applying for necessary licences, choosing premises, coming up with a suitable technical specification, deciding on lines and links, transmission and computer system suppliers, playout system selection and more.

We have expertise in designing and project managing major regional stations - all the way down through varying sizes of local commercial stations... to one of the smallest, most isolated Community stations in the Country. We've been involved in RSL and Community radio since the first inception of both these types of licences in Britain, we were amongst the first to make a "live" School radio station a reality. Our continuing involvement in Hospital and University stations dates back at least 30 years. We're happy to offer you the benefit of that experience, to formulate plans and then get you up and running without hassle. We can provide informed yet impartial advice on all types of broadcast audio equipment - including possible alternatives to suit your specific requirements, applications - and budget. We're always happy to discuss the best way to achieve the most appropriate and cost effective solution for any broadcast installation or application.

Help is available in developing and generating a suitable programme format, and following it through to work up a programme schedule designed to offer listeners your chosen combination of speech elements and music playlist - all designed to constantly attract and draw in new listeners, and encourage them to listen for longer.

Once plans are finalised, we can supply a very wide range of broadcast and consumer level equipment from top name manufacturers, including CD and SD players and recorders, microphones and stands, headphones, mixing Desks, Amplifiers, tuners, loudspeakers, rack equipment and lots more - all at competitive prices.

Broadcast equipment maintenance.
Moss Media can offer skilled yet cost effective technical backup for broadcast equipment maintenance and repair, covering everything from a faulty fader or clock to an intermittent cable, and on to complete facility refurbishment.

We can offer long or short term, minor or major maintenance plans for commercial broadcasters, covering routine and emergency work, repairs and service restoration, from microphone through to transmitter, working with specialist contractors where necessary. We can also usually arrange service, calibration or repair of most proprietary models and types of broadcast equipment - though inevitably the older it is, the more difficult (and more expensive) this work tends to become.

Keeping your station on air
If a piece of equipment is proving difficult to find or comes from famous names at what seems like high prices, we can probably help. Whether you're looking for keen prices on CD-R's, a reliable yet sensibly priced telephone balance unit, a USB clock to keep your computer on time, studio equipment of any kind - or straightforward audio, RF, satellite and electronic cables and components, call us. If its broadcast or consumer audio-electronics related and we don't have it, we'll do our best to find it within your budget, or suggest alternatives, or maybe even make one for you at a competitive price!

Presenter training in studio operations is an area of concern to many station managers. In the eyes and ears of listeners, your station's acceptability relies totally on the presenters appearing on it, and enthusiasm alone - whilst vital - is not really enough. Its no good being enthusiastic if endless mistakes ruin the listening experience. Listeners expect a polished performance whenever they tune in -- or chances are they'll go somewhere else. Radio presentation is a skill which builds to become a platform from which a presenter's personality and enthusiasm can develop. We can offer training in studio operations - constructing and presenting programmes, the basic technical knowledge to make a difference between an ordinary programme and a great one - the hints and tips from which new presenters can immediately benefit, but which might take them an on-air lifetime to find out for themselves.

If you need expert assistance with programming your existing station - in areas such as formatting, music policy and rotation, news, features, on-air promotion, audience building and targeting, how to interpret research, presenter training and lots more, our associate team can help in all these areas - and more. Please get in touch.

A broadcaster's priority - avoiding studio headphone heartache!
Niggling problems with studio headphones are one area of day to day broadcast operations that really can cause aggravation. As Beyerdynamic agents we can offer rapid turnaround on repairs for broadcast industry standard Beyer DT 100/150/190 and DT 250 headphones and headsets. Our stock of genuine replacement parts for these units usually ensures rapid turnaround on repairs/refurbishment - on a 'fixed cost plus parts' basis for DT100 series equipment - with all work carried out by experienced engineers. Alternatively, we can supply any parts needed to make your Beyer headphones as good as new. And naturally, as approved suppliers, we also offer the current range of brand new Beyer headphones and microphones at very competitive prices. See our Beyer headphones page for more details. Other well known brands of headphones and microphones are of course also available.

In summary, whatever the broadcast maintenance issue you’re facing, we’ll be happy to chat about the possibilities and offer advice on your specific problems - please call or e-mail.

Popular mods
Broadcasting brings with it many unique requirements - and often we can offer alternatives to established products for specific tasks. But sometimes there just isn't exactly the right box of tricks out there sitting on a shelf waiting to do your specific job as efficiently as you might like - or its price is outside the budget. If only we had a... Well, maybe you can. Over the years, Moss Media has been asked to provide various "black boxes" for radio station tasks, and as a result now has a range of standardised designs built to order to make broadcasting life a little bit easier.

Included here are various types of simple and complex studio and playout system to transmitter switchers, source selection switchers, line drivers, amplifiers, equalisers, level shifters, PA dim boxes... newsfeed insert mixers and switchers for computer automated systems, and those rare birds... straightforward red and green light desk and wall boxes - that don't cost an arm and a leg, and don't keep on blowing their bulbs.

We supply very cost effective satellite receivers and accompanying hardware, including dishes in various sizes, LNB's, patio and wall mounts, and guidance on aligning them all to receive the channels required.

We can also modify many models of recent domestic CD player (or minidisk machines) for remote stop/start, allowing easy integration with fader start in RSL and Community Radio environments. New Sony machines can be supplied suitably modified for such uses. Connection is usually straightforward, and necessary information is provided. Prices start from £35 plus VAT and carriage, or from £130 for a new, modified, basic CD player. Please ask for more details on machines and prices. Modified machines remain fully operable when remote facilities are not connected.

Please call or e-mail for more details on any of the services listed above.
